Paragraph 1:
* Add sentence at end of paragraph:
Note that if you wish to make use of geoFAX, the modem must have class 2 fax capability and at least 16k of RAM.
Section: Cartridge port interface
* Update:
"The second type is the Cartridge port interface. These allow you to use the higher speed modems such as 14.4k and 28.8k modems. "
to:
"The second type is the Cartridge port interface. These allow you to use the higher speed modems such as 14.4k (and faster) modems."
Section: Virtual Disk Drives:
After 1st Paragraph
* Add new paragraph:
Currently, CMD sell two RAM Expansion Units, the CMD 1750 (512k) and CMD 1750XL (2mb), and recommend that C64 and C64c owners use a heavy-duty power supply. Like the Super 1750 clone, these are physically smaller sized cartridges and can not be upgraded further. As well, they are limited in supply.
Section: Storage Hardware Conflicts :
Subsection: 2. Desterm v2.0
* Update:
"An updated version of Desterm is in the works."
to:
"Desterm v3 is currently in development and addresses these problems."
Chapter 2: Section: Protocols and File Transfers:
Paragraph 1:
Sentence beginning "Currently, Novaterm is the"
* Update last 2 sentences:
"Currently, Novaterm and Desterm v3 are the only Commodore term programs that support Zmodem. Desterm v3 and Novaterm v9.5 only support Zmodem downloads, but Novaterm version 9.6 allows you to use Zmodem for both uploads and downloads."
Chapter 3:
Section: SLIP and PPP Accounts - Not Yet
* Update header and paragraph to:
SLIP and PPP Accounts
Other types of connections you may be offered include SLIP (Serial Line Internet Protocol) or PPP (Point-to-Point Protocol). We can't take full advantage of these yet, but don't be too surprised if your account includes one of these along with your other access. SLIP software is currently under development, and this type of access is covered in Chapter 18.
Chapter 4 to Appendix 4:
* Update
"hal9000"
to:
"videocam"
EXCEPT in Chapter 9 on pages 42, 87 and 176, and the Appendix list of Internet Providers.
Chapter 7:
Section: When You Don't Have an Internet Account
* Update to:
Even if you don't have an Internet account, you can still send and even receive Email if you access the Internet from a public facility such as a library or Internet Cafe, by using the World Wide Web (Chapter 12). You can sign up and use a Email service such as Hotmail through their Web site at http://www.hotmail.com or Friendly Email at http://www.mypad.com/email.html.
Once signed up, you will have an Email address that you can access to read your mail anytime you have access to the Web.
Chapter 9:

Subsection: NNTP-SERVER:
Paragraph beginning "The only problem is it's not practical to."
* Replace with:
"The only problem is it's not practical to publish the name of a publicly available news server, as when word gets around, the server is inundated with users. There's a commercial (fee-based) service known as Newsguy News Service, (formerly Zippo News Service). Subscribers get access to all groups using an nntp-server style news feed. In Chapter 12, World Wide Web sites that keep updated lists of publicly available news servers are listed."
Section: Alternative Ways to Get News:

* Update
http://videocam.net.au/~gaelyne with: http://videocam.net.au/gaelyne/
Section: Downloading Graphics:
3rd paragraph:
"Some graphic files are used as links to ..."
* Update end of paragraph beginning:
"You may find that having the image"
to:
"You may find that having the image file shown as a link can be distracting as there are now two links rather than just one, configure this to meet your preference, but remember it's always available to you if needed. "
Section: Filling Out Forms
* Update/Replace current paragraph with:
Forms on the Web are pages that require you to fill in or change information to allow some interactivity. Some forms are for fun, such as the Favourite Commodore Programs page (http://videocam.net.au/favcbm.html), and others are for signing guest books, sending Email or ordering products. The first time I found myself on a page with a form I found it confusing, because I didn't know the various formats used, or how Lynx responds to them. If you have Lynx configured so the links are numbered, you'll find that you'll have to use your cursor keys to move about the page. A newer version of Lynx allows you to configure it so that forms are also numbered, which makes it much easier to navigate a web page with forms in it.
Section: Keypad as Arrows or Numbered Links
* Update header and paragraph:
'Keypad as Arrows', 'Links are Numbered', and 'Links and Form Fields
are Numbered'
This affects whether you see highlighted links (Figure 7), numbered links (Figure 8), or numbered links and form fields, which makes it easier to navigate pages with forms. Something C128 users might appreciate is that their numeric keypad can be used as arrow keys. However, even C64 users can make use of the following key presses for moving about a document:
Section: C= Related Web Pages
* Update list:

Section: Commodore IRC Channels
* Update list: (See text above for current list)
Chapter 15:
Section: Using a QWK Mail Door: Packing Option
* Update:
Packing Option ARC, PKPAK, LZH, ZIP (or PKZIP).
Section: Dissolving the Archived QWK Packet
* Update current paragraph to:
After downloading the QWK packet, the next step is to dissolve the archive. What program you use for this depends on which packer was used to archive the files. If you selected a specific packer type, knowing what program to use to dissolve the file isn't a problem. Some systems don't give you a choice for the packer used, so you will have to "play it by ear" and experiment. Try using UNZIP64 (currently v2) to dissolve the file, as it handles PKZip 2.04g files. If this doesn't work, the next option to try is QPE (found in NZP12819.SFX), as it aids in dissolving PKZip 1.x and ARC files. See Chapter 17 for more information on archived files.
Section: Commodore Mail Lists:
Sub-section: TIFCU Mail List
* Update current paragraph to:
The Tifcu mailing list is an extension of this book. It's for anyone who want to keep abreast of Internet changes as relates to Commodore users. Updated information and help with learning to use Internet utilities is available. More information about the list is available at http://videocam.net.au/tifcu/mail_list/. To subscribe to the list, send Email to the administration address at tifcu-info@videocam.net.au and in the body of the message type: 'get help '
This will send the instructions on how to subscribe to the list (it's currently undergoing changes). To send messages to the list once subscribed, the address is: tifcu@videocam.net.au
Section: Commodore Mail Lists
* Add:
Novaterm Mail List
The Novaterm mailing list was set up by author Nick Rossi to support the Novaterm terminal program. To subscribe, send a message to novaterm-list-request@eskimo.com and in the subject line, type "subscribe". To send messages to the list, the address is novaterm-list@eskimo.com
* Add:

Section: FTP by Email:
last paragraph and example on page 202
* Update current text to:
Choose an FTPMail server that's near you to use. Since you'll need a list of good FTP sites to check out, we'll retrieve the ftp-sites-list file that's stored at videocam.net.au in the cbm/info-txt/tifcu directory. In the body of your message, type:
open videocam.net.au
cd cbm/info-txt/tifcu
mode ascii
get ftp-sites-list
quit
Section: FTP by Email:
FTP Server Commands:
Example on page 204
* Update current text with:
open videocam.net.au
cd cbm/incoming
dir
quit
Results: Opens videocam.net.au site, moves to the cbm/incoming directory, and sends the directory listing.
Section: FTP by Email:
FTP Server Commands:
Example on pages 204 & 205
* Update current text with:
open videocam.net.au
cd cbm/terms
mime
mode ascii
get wavedemo.txt
mode binary
get wavedemo.sfx
quit
Results: Opens videocam.net.au site, moves to the cbm/terms directory, changes the default method of returning binary files to MIME, sets the mode to ASCII and retrieves wavedemo.txt. Changes to binary mode and retrieves wavedemo.sfx as application/octet-stream, and quits.
Chapter 16:
Section: Using Aliases to Make Quick Shortcuts:
Pages 215-217, 223:
* Update references:
rgasson@hal9000.net.au to: rgasson@videocam.net.au
/~gaelyne to: /gaelyne/
http://videocam.net.au/~gaelyne to: http://videocam.net.au/gaelyne/
Section: The MIME.TYPES File:
Paragraph beginning "Include as many Commodore file extensions..." (Page 226)
* Update current paragraph with:
Include as many Commodore file extensions (the dot (.) isn't included) as you run into online. When you find a file extension not listed in your mime.types file, update the file to include it. A complete mime.types file for Commodore and other users can be retrieved via FTP at videocam.net.au in the cbm/info-txt directory.
Section: Editing the .IRCRC File:
Last paragraph of section (Page 230)
* Update to:
The IRC FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions) file can be found on the Web at http://www.irchelp.org/ This has an excellent sample .ircrc file that you can import into your own.
Chapter 17:
Section: File Transfer Problems
: After Paragraph beginning "If using an Amiga BBS system,"
* Add:
Telnet (Chapter 10) file transfer problems usually happen due to not using an 8bit connection. Always start telnet (or rlogin) with "-8" to avoid this problem.
Flow Control (Chapter 2) in both the modem and term program can sometimes be the cause of problems, especially when transferring binary files as opposed to text. Be sure both the modem and the term program are using the same type of flow control, preferably RTS/CTS (also known as 'hardware' flow control).
Section: Commodore Archives:
1st paragraph
* Update "(PKZIP V1.x only)," to: "(or PKZIP),"
Section: Commodore Archives:
Subsection: .zip
* Update current text to:
There are two different versions of PKZip (v1.x and v2.04g). For version 1.x type Zip files, we can use NZP12819.SFX (this includes Unzip128 and Unzip64 programs) or UNZIP101.SFX (for C64 users). PKZip v2.04g is very commonly used on other computer platforms, and fortunately we now have a program that can dissolve this type of file, UNZP6420.PRG, by Errol Smith.
Section: Viewing GIF Pictures:
List of C64 programs
* Add:
GoDot Commercial Graphics manipulation program.
GODOTDMx.SFX GoDot Demo (replace "x" with numbers 1-3). Fully
working, but doesn't save or print.
Section: Viewing GIF Pictures:
Sub-section: Viewing Problems
* Update current paragraph to:
If a GIF file is interlaced, the above programs will not be able to display the file. The majority of the above programs will only display GIF87a files, and not show the newer GIF89a format, with the exception of GoDot. Unfortunately, there's no way to tell what format the GIF is until after it's downloaded.
Section: Text Files:
Subsection: Converting Text Files Offline:
Paragraph beginning "A program to convert UNIX files to MS-DOS format can be found via FTP at:" (Page 244)
* Update to:
A program to convert UNIX files to MS-DOS format can be found via FTP at: videocam.net.au cbm/utils/qtt64v2.sfx
Section: Text Files:
Subsection: Converting Text Files Offline:
Paragraph beginning "If you've become comfortable using UNIX" (Page 244)
* Update to:
If you've become comfortable using UNIX, you may appreciate an operating system for the C64/128 with a UNIX feel to it. The operating system is ACE, and it can be retrieved by FTP from videocam.net.au in the cbm/utils directory. To read a PETASCII file using ACE, use the more command.
Section: Files Through Email:
Subsection: Decoding MIME Files Offline:
Paragraph beginning "A program to decode MIME files" (Page 252)
* Update to:
A program to decode MIME files on either the C64 or C128 can be found via FTP at videocam.net.au in the cbm/utils directory. The program name is de-mimer.prg and it's a BASIC program. When the program is run, it prompts for the name of the text file to decode (this file must be in ASCII format), the source drive, and destination drive.

Finding Updated Information
* Replace the current paragraph with:
Information in any book changes from time to time, and this is more so when it comes to books about the Internet. People change Internet providers and their Email address and WWW URL's change. For Commodore related updates, the best place to find current information is from TIFCU, a mail list developed to support the readers of this book. Information on subscribing to TIFCU is included above, and in Chapter 15. Other sources of updated information include the comp.sys.cbm newsgroup, or any of the many World Wide Web sites listed. Using this book as your guide, you can use the resources of the Internet to learn about updated sites and find many new ones to explore, too. Happy exploring!
